Claude Usage Limits in 2026: Every Change, Dated
Claude's usage limits changed more in 2026 than in any year before. If you have not followed every announcement, here is everything in order, with what still applies today.
March 13–28: 2x usage outside peak hours
Anthropic ran a two-week promotion that doubled usage outside weekdays 5–11 AM Pacific Time and all weekend. It covered the Claude apps and Claude Code on Free, Pro, Max and Team plans, and the extra usage did not count toward weekly limits. This is where the 5–11 AM PT window that this site tracks comes from.
March 26: peak hours become permanent
Anthropic announced that during weekdays 5–11 AM PT, Free, Pro and Max users "move through your 5-hour session limits faster than before". Weekly limits stayed the same. Anthropic estimated that about 7% of users would hit limits they would not have hit before.
May 6: Claude Code limits doubled, peak-hour reduction removed for Claude Code
Anthropic doubled Claude Code's 5-hour limits for Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise plans, and removed the peak-hour reduction on Claude Code for Pro and Max. It also raised API rate limits for Opus models. A temporary 50% boost to Claude Code weekly limits started around the same time.
Important: the announcement only mentions Claude Code. No end has been announced for peak hours in Claude chat or on the Free plan.
August: auto-continue in Claude Code
Claude Code Desktop added an "Auto-continue when limits reset" option: when you hit your session limit, it retries the interrupted turn by itself once the limit resets. The command-line version later got the same behavior.
September 1: Claude Fable 5.1
Anthropic released Fable 5.1, its most capable generally available model, with a 1M-token context window.
September 14: new weekly limits for Claude Code
The temporary 50% weekly boost ended on September 13. From September 14, Claude Code weekly limits are permanently 25% higher than the original limit for Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise. Compared with the boosted limit, that is about 17% less. The separate Opus-only weekly limit was removed, so your whole weekly limit can go to any model. The doubled 5-hour limits from May stayed.
September 22: Opus 5.5 and a free limit reset
Claude Opus 5.5 launched, and eligible paid plans got a one-time "Reset for free" button under Settings → Usage that refills your limits immediately. It expires October 22, 2026. Read our guide.
September 28: Claude Sonnet 5.5
Sonnet 5.5 arrived as the faster everyday model, generating output more than 30% faster than Sonnet 5.
What applies right now
- Two limits: a 5-hour session and a weekly limit. How resets work.
- Peak hours: weekdays 5–11 AM PT still matter for Claude chat and the Free plan, but not for Claude Code on Pro and Max.
- No fixed message counts: Anthropic does not publish them; usage depends on message length, files, model and features.
