When Do Claude Usage Limits Reset? 5-Hour and Weekly Limits Explained
"You've reached your usage limit" is the message every Claude user dreads. The good news: limits always reset on their own. The catch: Claude has two different limits, and they reset in different ways.
1. The 5-hour session limit
Every plan, including Free, has a session limit. The clock starts with your first message, not at a fixed time of day. Five hours later, the session resets and your next message starts a new window.
Example: you send your first message at 9:40. Your session resets at 14:40, no matter how much or how little you used in between.
In Claude chat and on the Free plan, this session limit drains faster during peak hours (weekdays 5–11 AM Pacific Time). Claude Code on Pro and Max is no longer affected since May 6, 2026.
2. The weekly limit
Paid plans (Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise) also have a weekly limit. Unlike the session limit, it does not move with your usage. Anthropic assigns each account a fixed reset day and time: "Your reset day and time stay the same regardless of when you start using Claude or when your subscription begins."
The weekly limit is the one that can lock you out for days, so it is worth knowing your reset time.
How to check your reset times
- Open claude.ai → Settings → Usage.
- You will see progress bars for your current session and your weekly limit, with the time each one resets.
- Enter your weekly reset day and time in the weekly timer on our homepage to get a countdown in your own timezone.
Can you reset Claude limits early?
Usually not. There is no support request or setting that clears the meter. The one exception is the occasional "Reset for free" offer: with Opus 5.5, eligible paid plans got a one-time reset that refills limits instantly (until October 22, 2026). Here is how to use it.
What if you hit the limit in Claude Code?
Claude Code can wait for you. In the desktop app, tick "Auto-continue when limits reset" on the limit card and it resumes your task when your session resets. This works for the 5-hour session limit, not for the weekly limit.
