Claude "Overloaded" Error (529): What It Means and When It Happens
Sometimes Claude replies with "Overloaded", an error 529, or just stops partway through. This is a different problem from hitting your usage limit, and it helps to know which one you are looking at.
Overloaded vs. usage limit
- Overloaded (529): Anthropic's servers are at capacity. It affects many users at once, has nothing to do with your plan, and usually clears within minutes.
- Usage limit reached: you have used your 5-hour session or weekly allowance. Claude tells you when it resets. How resets work.
When does it happen most?
Capacity is tightest when the most people use Claude at once:
- Weekday peak hours, 5–11 AM Pacific Time, when US working hours overlap with the European afternoon. This is the same window Anthropic uses for peak-hour limits.
- Right after big launches, such as a new model, when everyone tries it at once.
- During incidents, which Anthropic posts on its status page.
What to do
- Wait a minute and retry. Most overload errors are short.
- Check status.claude.com to see whether there is a known incident with claude.ai, Claude Code or the API.
- Try a different model. When one model is busy, another may respond normally.
- Move heavy work off-peak. Long research tasks and big Claude Code jobs run smoother outside weekdays 5–11 AM PT. Check if it is off-peak now.
- API users: retry with exponential backoff. A 529 is temporary, unlike a 429 rate-limit error.
Does an overloaded error use up my limit?
A request that fails before Claude answers should not cost you much, but a reply that stops halfway may already have used some of your session. If a long answer breaks off, ask Claude to continue rather than starting over.
